IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR 2008

Dear Everyone,

I hope you have all thoroughly enjoyed your holidays and are now looking forward to returning to Sydney Uni and SUSO this year!

Signing up for SUSO is held in O Week (the Wed-Fri of the week before Semester 1), beginning Wednesday 27th February 2008. The auditions themselves will take place on that Thursday and Friday (28th and 29th February).

Please see the News page for important registration imfortmation.

To book an audition, please come to the SUSO stall on the front lawns during O Week, OR you can email suso_soc@hotmail.com between now and O Week to request a time for the Thursday or Friday. The auditions run from 9am - 5pm in the Old Darlington School on campus.

The 2008 audition requirements are as follows:
1. An unaccompanied piece of your choice.
2. A scale of your choice. We suggest a minimum of 2 octaves.
3. Sight-reading: The panel will provide a short passage of music from one of the works SUSO will be performing in 2008.

There is a $10 audition fee to help SUSO cover audition costs. In the event of an unsuccessful audition, a complimentary ticket to the first SUSO concert of the year will be issued.

NEW AUDITION POLICY

As SUSO continues to thrive each year, we attract more and more talented players. As the biggest ensemble on campus, the SUSO Committee makes every effort to offer as many opportunities as possible to Sydney Uni students. As a result, from 2008, in the event of a large number of quality auditions, the SUSO Committee may ask returning members to reaudition. If this occasion should arise, all returning members will notified as soon as possible and given ample time to prepare.

WEBSITE

The SUSO Committee is looking to update and improve our website in 2008. If you love web design and would like to contribute to SUSO by helping us maintain our website, please send an email to Rebecca Linquist (PR Manager) at suso_soc@hotmail.com

HISTORY OF THE SYDNEY UNIVERSITY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The Sydney University Symphony Orchestra was founded by Donald Peart in 1948, then named the 'Pro Musica Orchestra'. Based in the Department of Music, the orchestra welcomes players from all over the University and also from outside it. Most players in the orchestra are studying for their Bachelor of Music or higher degrees in performance at the University of Sydney, while others are continuing their music experience simultaneously studying towards non music-related degrees. In this environment the orchestra provides an atmosphere both seriously committed to music-making and social interaction, through which the studies and concert practice of music students can be shared with the University and the broader community.

With prominent Australian composers Peter Sculthorpe, Anne Boyd, Ross Edwards and younger professional composers, John Peterson, Kirsty Beilharz, Matthew Hindson, Paul Stanhope, Nick Vines and Jane Stanley associated with the Music Department as academic staff or alumni, the Sydney University Symphony Orchestra has been exposed to some ground-breaking music with the added advantage of collaborating with the composer.

Over the years, conductors of the orchestra have included Eric Gross, Peter Platt, Ben Macpherson, Nicholas Routley and Colin Piper. Most concerts take place in the Great Hall, University of Sydney while the orchestra rehearses, currently on Monday evenings, in the Old Darlington School at Sydney University.
